Bringing “Grandma and Me” to Life: A Children’s Book Illustration Journey with 7-Year-Old Author Alexander J. Harper

Introduction: When Art Meets a Heartfelt Story

Every illustration project brings its own unique set of emotions, colors, and characters to life. But every once in a while, a project comes along that touches your heart in an entirely different way. Recently, I had the extraordinary privilege of working as the children’s book illustrator on a profoundly moving project: “Grandma and Me”, written by an exceptionally talented 7-year-old author, Alexander J. Harper.

Working alongside Alexander and seeing his vision transform into vibrant, comforting artwork has been one of the most rewarding milestones in my illustration career. Knowing that the book is now out in the world—and seeing the pure joy on young readers’ faces—makes every brushstroke worthwhile.

About the Book: A Story of Love, Memory, and Legacy

Grandma and Me is a touching children’s story inspired by the special, unbreakable bond between a little boy and his grandmother, Barbara Pickens. After the passing of his beloved grandmother in June 2025, Alexander wanted to create a lasting tribute—a way to celebrate the beautiful memories they shared together and keep her legacy alive.

Through love, patience, treasured memories, and unwavering faith, the story gently helps children navigate complex emotions like dementia, grief, and the enduring nature of love. Written with honesty and compassion, it reminds families that even when memories change, love remains forever.

The Illustration Process: Capturing Emotion on Every Page

As an illustrator, translating a young author’s deeply personal grief and love into visual art required immense care and sensitivity. My goal was to create warm, inviting, and emotionally resonant imagery that would make children feel safe, understood, and embraced.

  • Color Palette Selection: We chose soft, comforting, and warm tones—golden living room lights, cozy blankets, and gentle facial expressions—to evoke feelings of safety and nostalgia.
  • Character Design: Capturing Alexander’s likeness alongside his loving grandmother required careful attention to detail, ensuring their facial warmth, smiles, and interactions radiated authentic love.
  • Visual Storytelling: Every page layout was meticulously structured to balance white space with engaging details, allowing young readers to emotionally connect with the narrative arc.

Celebrating the Milestone: Seeing the First Readers Smile

There is no greater reward for an illustrator and author team than seeing a child open the book for the very first time. Hearing how happy Alexander and his family are with the final artwork—and watching young readers curl up on the couch with a copy of Grandma and Me—is the ultimate validation of our collaborative effort.

Books like this remind us that stories have the power to heal, connect, and comfort us across generations. I am deeply honored to have lent my artistic voice to Alexander’s incredible masterpiece.
